The Patio on Guerra occupies a historic brick building on South 17th Street, in the heart of downtown McAllen's bar and restaurant district. Inside it is arched brick, candlelight and white tablecloths; a guitarist or singer plays most nights; and the wine list has carried a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. It reads as the grown-up room on a street known for its nightlife — which is exactly why it works as the first stop of a downtown night.

The menu is steakhouse-and-sea with a South Texas accent. Starters run from Guerra tapas and a crab meat tower to lollipop lamb chops, Spanish mussels in saffron cream, frog legs and bacon-wrapped shrimp and scallops (half price at happy hour, 5 to 6:30 PM Monday through Friday). Entrées cover red snapper, Chilean sea bass, sesame-crusted ahi, rack of lamb, a tomahawk ribeye and the filet-and-lobster plate, with a cheesecake finish.

Reservations are taken online, and a private room handles rehearsal dinners, corporate tables and birthdays. Bau Rooftop is next door and 17th Street's bars are a short walk, so dinner here turns into the rest of the night without moving the car.
