Santa Fe Steakhouse & Cantina has been the Rio Grande Valley's special-occasion steakhouse for three decades. Behind the lantern-lit courtyard on South 10th Street are a white-tablecloth dining room with a pianist most nights, a cantina with its own band schedule, a garden patio warmed by a stone fireplace, wine-cellar private rooms and a rooftop terrace for events — the 'Great Escape' the restaurant has promised McAllen since 1993.

The kitchen is classic and generous: bacon-wrapped oysters, lobster bisque, filet with brie and roasted garlic, bone-in chops flambéed tableside, rack of lamb over sweet potato purée, salmon on Israeli couscous and the twice-baked potatoes regulars refuse to skip. It is backed by one of the deepest cellars in South Texas — more than 600 labels — and an annual Santa Fe Wine Classic plus winemaker dinners through the year.

Live music runs seven nights: piano in the main dining room Monday through Saturday, and acoustic, jazz, Latin and classic-rock sets in the cantina until midnight or later. Smart-casual dress code (no hats, shorts, tank tops or flip-flops) — it is the kind of room worth dressing for before a night at Payne Arena.
