MOUSAI takes its name from the Greek muses, and the room plays the part: paper lanterns, a sculpted tree at the center of the dining room, LED walls and a bar that glows beneath a seated Buddha. It sits in the Auburn Avenue complex north of Nolana, a few doors from Ambra, and it has become the late-night table for McAllen's sushi crowd — the kitchen runs until midnight midweek and 2 AM Thursday through Saturday.

The menu blends Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian traditions with South Texas hospitality. Hand-crafted nigiri, sashimi and signature rolls come off the sushi counter; the robata grill sears A5 Wagyu, Chilean sea bass and lamb chops over binchotan charcoal; and the bar pours rare sake, Japanese whisky and signature cocktails (the Negroni is a regular favorite, the Mia pistachio lava cake the usual finish). Sunday brunch is its own event — Japanese fried chicken and waffles, chilaquiles de ribeye, aguachile verde and Oreo pancakes.

MOUSAI also programs the room: Omakase Thursdays, Whisky & Wagyu nights and cocktail masterclasses, plus a private dining room and full-venue buyouts for corporate dinners and receptions.
